Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy. The great artist was raised in Florentine, and was born into a fairly large family of stonecutters. Michelangelo was thirteen when he first went to the local painter's workshop, though a year later he moved into the palace of the Florentine ruler, Lorenzo the Magnificent, of the powerful Medici family, to study classical sculpture in the Medici gardens.

While staying at the palace, he studied for three years to later meet artists, poets, and scholars. Michelangelo even got permission to dissect human corpses to learn more about the human body. This was in order to make his sculptures more realistic.

One of his most renown sculptures, is the sculpture of Pieta - which means pity -. This is the sculpture of Mary holding her dead son Jesus in her lap. Michelangelo also did the Sistine Chapel which turned the known sculptor into a painter. There is also the sculpture given the name of David. This sculpture is a fourteen feet tall and realistically depicts the human body in marble.

In all, Michelangelo is not only an interesting man to learn about, but one of the most famous Renaissance men, and is known for his many, many sculptures.
