In 1440 in Florence Donatello created the David. This was important because it was the first free-standing nude sculpture since classical antiquity. Before this, in the Christian medieval the soul was mostly focused the body was just a sad shell. This sculpture returns to the greek and roman art where you were proud of your body which was clearly shown. The posture and shape of the sculpture is more relaxed and almost looked like it was moving while in medieval times the sculptures were more put together or boxed. This sculpture is made up of mostly bronze some copper and little bit of tin. The sculpture is actually hollow, many saw this as a great achievement because the wax casting was commonly not used in the medieval centuries mostly in ancient Rome and ancient Greece. Even then wax casting was mostly only used with small sculptures. This sculpture has a lot of meaning to it. it has David standing on Goliaths decapitated head with David holding Goliath's sword which as you can see has lots of battle marks on it. Although this sculpture represents war it represents war ending and peace. This shown with David's hat being soft, unlike Goliath's battle helmet. Also in David's left hand is the rock that was used for the slingshot. Many people believed that this has to go with the message that the underdog can win. Kinda of like how the people of Florence won against Milan although being a military city.
