Oil paint is a type of long drying paint. Some of the Oils that are used for oil paint are walnut oil, safflower oil, and poppy seed oil. The type of oil really depends on the pigment color and brand. If you don't know what pigment is it is like the color strength. There are in my mind two different types of oil paint there is natural wich has fruits for its pigments and oils from seeds. While there is synthetic oil paint where there the pigment come from different types of chemicals mixed together to create the pigment with different types of oil. You can buy these types of oil paints at your local art store. You can check the label of your oil paints to see if they are organic and nontoxic. It was claimed by Vasari (a well-known artist) that Jan van Eyck created oil paint. Many people doubt that Jan van Eyck created oil paint. The reason why people doubt this claim is because he is well known for experimenting with paint and help create many types of paints but did not found them; therefore, he should still be recognized as a leader in the paint industry.
Some of the most famous paintings done in oil paint are down bellow
